With this vital step soon to be completed, company officials expect to open their newest gaming destination on the Las Vegas strip before the end of the year.

Business: Palms penalized for outside poker tournaments

The famous Palms Casino Resort, just off the Las Vegas Strip, was fined US$100,000 by the Nevada Gaming Control Board for allowing outside firms to promote and operate two no-limit Texas Hold’em poker tournaments on their properties in 2007 in response to complaints from some tournament participants. State law only allows casino management to operated gaming tournaments at a licensed casino.

Business: CEO of Pinnacle Entertainment quits

Dan Lee, the Chief Executive Officer of Pinnacle Entertainment, announced his resignation last week “to pursue other business interests.” The longtime casino executive stated that he would leave his post effective immediately after he became the target of investigation by the Missouri Gaming Commission. Missouri officials sought to look into Mr. Lee’s discussions with St. Louis County board members revolving around competition for a new casino south of St. Louis.

On Wednesday, the company that owns the legendary Churchill Downs racetrack expanded onto new turf when they announced their decision to buy out online competitor YouBet.com. The California-based betting site specializes in U.S. horse racing, and Churchill Downs' acquisition of it gives them control of approximately half of the online horse betting market. The final price tag? A cool $127 million in cash and stocks, but many experts say it was a small price to pay for the struggling track to secure such a large online presence.

The town of Deadwood, South Dakota, celebrated the twentieth anniversary of legalized gambling in the city limits with an Old West-style party with cowboys, dance hall girls and “showdowns” in the dusty streets. The introduction of casino resorts to the historic site has led to a substantial increase in jobs, tourism and the local tax base. Back in 1989, Deadwood was “dead”, both financially and in its ability to draw visitors.
