Four Massachusetts Democratic candidates seeking election to the US Senate seat vacated by the death of Senator Edward Kennedy have divergent opinions on the issue of bringing casino gaming to the state. Alan Khazei has voiced his opposition to the legalization of casino-style gambling in Massachusetts, claiming that the practice brings severe social costs in the forms of a rise in the incidence of gambling addiction, higher crime rates and urban blight.

Despite dwindling gambling revenues in other parts of the country, many states are still hopeful that new gambling endeavors will solve the economy-inspired budget crises. Add Illinois to the list.

Earlier this year, Illinois passed new legislation allowing for limited gambling in bars and also gave the go-ahead for online horse racing. Now, Mayor Daley is suggesting that a major casino-resort could be just what Chicago needs to turn his city around.

In another sign of the economic downturn, many of the major casino holding companies have announced severe shortages in revenue during the third quarter of this year. Shares of Wynn Resorts, owners of the Wynn and Encore properties on the Las Vegas Strip and the Wynn Macau near Hong Kong, dropped by more than ten percent, in spite of earnings that exceeded Wall Street’s expectations.

Blotter: Kentucky Supreme Court to hear domain name case

Arguments began this week as the Kentucky Supreme Court dealt with the case of the state attempting to seize the domain names of several online poker and gaming sites. Secretary of the Justice for the Commonwealth of Kentucky Michael Brown conducted a civil action last summer seeking to seize the domain names of more than a hundred major internet gambling sites in an effort to enforce the state’s anti-gambling laws.

New York Poker Pro Tommy Vedes took down his first major title when he won the World Poker Tour Festa Al Lago event at the Bellagio Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Vedes claimed the title when he defeated Jason Lavalee heads-up as his king-queen surpassed Lavallee’s eight-six when he caught queens on both the turn and the river to take home the US$1.2 million first prize.

The fiery competitor is seeking his third career World Poker Tour title, which would tie him with Gus “The Great Dane” Hansen for the most wins in the Tour’s eight-year history, as well as the US$1.2 million first prize.

Grass-roots political efforts meet the “information superhighway” as online casino customers throughout the European Union have signed a petition to break down the trade barriers between member nations regarding online gaming sites. Recently, some member nations have blocked their citizens’ access to online casino sites based outside their borders in order to enforce their domestic gambling monopolies. According to the site Right2Bet.net, this prohibition is a violation of the European Community Treaty.

As we reported last week, Las Vegas is expecting a major slowdown in development and expansion on the Strip. That said, MGM Mirage and their partner Dubai World have been working on an $11 billion project that's expected to change the face of Las Vegas forever. It's called City Center, and a large part of it is opening this year.
