Texas Holdem Introduction

For the past decade, Texas Holdem has been the most popular form of poker in both online and brick-and-mortar rooms. Televised broadcasts of the game have even made their way to prime-time TV, and everywhere you look, it seems, people are sitting down, cracking a deck and dealing the hole. No doubt, you're one of these very people, and have found your way to Gambling Planet Poker looking for an edge. But, before we get down to any specific rules and strategies, we think it's best to explain why Holdem has gotten as big as it has. Simply put, what makes Texas Holdem so great?

Below we've listed some of the top reasons why people play Holdem - all of which should provide a sufficient introduction for anyone who just busted out of the hermitage and has never seen the game before. If you are already familiar with the game, you can skip these formalities and head straight to our first (of many) Texas Holdem Strategy pages. Otherwise, since we've now got your ear, sit back, relax and prepare to be sold on the greatest game on Earth!

Reasons to Play Texas Holdem

Reason No. 1: Holdem is Easy to Learn
The basic rules of Texas Holdem are very simple. It's perhaps the easiest poker game to learn, and that appeals to newcomers.

Reason No. 2: Holdem is Hard to Master
Though the rules can be explained in five minutes, learning them is just the first step on the road to achieving Holdem mastery. A true understanding of the game can take a lifetime, and in fact, many have dedicated their lives to doing so. Endless tactics and crazy, mind-twisting schemes can be found in every poker variety, but it's the seeming simplicity of Holdem that makes its strategy concepts all the more mind-blowing.

Reason No. 3: Holdem is Fast-Paced
As we'll discuss further in the Basic Rules section, Texas Holdem has only two hole cards and five community cards. This makes Holdem the fastest moving poker game. Why does this make a difference? Well, for one thing, when more players get to play more hands, everyone is happy - and a fast game will let you do this. What's more, fast-paced games make for better TV for the same reason chase scenes will never leave the silver screen. They're just too darned exciting.

Reason No. 4: Better Players Can Expect to Win More
Better players stand a better chance of winning at Holdem. Of course, this is true of any poker variety. But, with Holdem, better players can gain more of an edge through the use of time-tested strategies, while weaker players can go wrong from the very beginning of a hand and end up just feeding the pot.

Reason No. 5: Lady Luck's Paradox
Since any two cards can win - sometimes even late in the game - weaker players will often chase a hand longer than they should. Sometimes they will get lucky and come away with the pot. Over time, however, this strategy will lose more often than it wins - which is why more experienced players have an edge. Basically, the same thing that draws beginners to the game is the reason that experts hang around, snacking on their tasty fish behinds.

Reason No. 6: Holdem is the Drama Queen of Poker
In Texas Holdem there are five community cards, any number of which can be used by players to make up their hands. This is more than most other poker varieties (except Omaha), and with so many cards out in the open, the game has a real communal feel. On a psychological level, Holdem is more of a group activity than, say, Draw or Stud, and such an "open environment" makes more room for bluffing and chicanery - both online and off.
